Citrus County had an estimated 170,174 residents in July 2024, the 32nd most populous of Florida's 67 counties, up 10.6% since the 2020 census. Of those, 145,497 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 36.6% are 65 or older. Its 120,483 active registered voters equal about 82.8% of that voting-age population.
It covers 582 square miles of land (292 people per square mile), and 93.2% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Inverness (7,887) and Crystal River (3,661). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 56.9, a median household income of $56,546, 20.6% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 85.2% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 98,233 votes were cast for president, about 67.5% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 26.7% and the Republican ticket 72.6%. The two-party margin moved from R+16.1 in 2008 to R+45.9 in 2024.
