DeSoto County had an estimated 36,744 residents in July 2024, the 49th most populous of Florida's 67 counties, up 8.2% since the 2020 census. Of those, 30,122 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 23.9% are 65 or older. Its 15,961 active registered voters equal about 53.0% of that voting-age population.
It covers 637 square miles of land (58 people per square mile), and 78.3% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. Its one incorporated place is Arcadia (7,974 residents). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 43.5, a median household income of $54,417, 10.8% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 72.5% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 12,488 votes were cast for president, about 41.5% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 28.2% and the Republican ticket 71.2%. The two-party margin moved from R+12.3 in 2008 to R+43.0 in 2024.
