Indian River County had an estimated 172,139 residents in July 2024, the 31st most populous of Florida's 67 counties, up 7.7% since the 2020 census. Of those, 146,767 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 36.1% are 65 or older. Its 118,912 active registered voters equal about 81.0% of that voting-age population.
It covers 503 square miles of land (342 people per square mile), and 68.2% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Sebastian (27,087), Vero Beach (17,556), Fellsmere (5,028), Indian River Shores (4,466) and Orchid (545). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 55.3, a median household income of $73,491, 33.8% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 80.1% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 99,015 votes were cast for president, about 67.5% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 36.0% and the Republican ticket 63.4%. The two-party margin moved from R+14.8 in 2008 to R+27.4 in 2024.
