Marion County had an estimated 428,905 residents in July 2024, the 18th most populous of Florida's 67 counties, up 14.1% since the 2020 census. Of those, 349,494 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 28.5% are 65 or older. Its 268,778 active registered voters equal about 76.9% of that voting-age population.
It covers 1,588 square miles of land (270 people per square mile), and 81.5% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Ocala (70,251), Belleview (6,156), Dunnellon (2,043), McIntosh (532) and Reddick (516). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 47.9, a median household income of $61,010, 23.4% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 77.5% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 214,101 votes were cast for president, about 61.3% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 33.8% and the Republican ticket 65.5%. The two-party margin moved from R+11.6 in 2008 to R+31.7 in 2024.
