Monroe County had an estimated 80,908 residents in July 2024, the 39th most populous of Florida's 67 counties, down 2.4% since the 2020 census. Of those, 68,262 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 25.9% are 65 or older. Its 54,694 active registered voters equal about 80.1% of that voting-age population.
It covers 983 square miles of land (82 people per square mile), and 46.5% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Key West (25,240), Marathon (10,039), Islamorada, Village of Islands (7,013), Key Colony Beach (749) and Layton (208). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 49.2, a median household income of $87,738, 38.6% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 65.8% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 44,327 votes were cast for president, about 64.9% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 40.5% and the Republican ticket 58.8%. The two-party margin moved from D+4.9 in 2008 to R+18.3 in 2024.
