Polk County had an estimated 852,878 residents in July 2024, the ninth most populous of Florida's 67 counties, up 17.6% since the 2020 census. Of those, 666,929 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 19.2% are 65 or older. Its 454,838 active registered voters equal about 68.2% of that voting-age population.
It covers 1,798 square miles of land (474 people per square mile), and 59.7% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Lakeland (124,990), Winter Haven (59,975), Haines City (42,073), Bartow (22,084) and Auburndale (20,659). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 39.5, a median household income of $65,978, 23.5% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 70.5% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 348,922 votes were cast for president, about 52.3% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 39.2% and the Republican ticket 59.9%. The two-party margin moved from R+6.1 in 2008 to R+20.7 in 2024.
