How to get the Louisiana voter file.

Louisiana isn't pre-loaded on Motion51, so you request your district's voter file from the state and we load it in. Here's exactly where to get it, what it costs, how long it takes, and the rules — in plain English.

The short version.

The Louisiana voter registration file is a public record you request from the state elections office. You pay a fee, sign a use affidavit, and get the list of registered voters for your district — names, addresses, and registration details. Then you hand it to Motion51 and we load it, geocode it, and cut your turf.

Louisiana runs everything through the Secretary of State's online "Purchase Voter Lists" tool. You define exactly which voters you want, the system generates a price quote, you pay in advance, and the file is emailed to you as tab-delimited text.

What it costs.

Quote-on-demand via the online ordering tool (no flat rate published); +$5.00 statutory convenience fee on credit-card payments; vote history is an extra-cost option

Tip — you may only need one county. Louisiana prices by what you select, so narrowing to your parish or district instead of the whole state keeps the cost down -- define the smallest area that covers your race.

How to request it, step by step.

  1. Go to the Secretary of State's Purchase Voter Lists application (linked from sos.la.gov).
  2. Define your selection criteria -- parish, precinct, district, party, and so on.
  3. Review the system-generated cost estimate. Vote history is an extra-cost add-on.
  4. Pay in advance by credit card (a $5 statutory convenience fee applies) or check.
  5. The file is delivered by email as tab-delimited text and/or PDF, usually within a few business days; printable address-label PDFs are available on request.

How long it takes.

Typically a few business days after payment clears; large statewide pulls with vote history can take longer (commonly 5-10 business days)

Use restrictions — read before you order.

Use must comply with LA Election Code; commercial use prohibited. Permitted uses are election, political, governmental, scholarly, journalistic, and political-fundraising purposes. Purchaser is responsible for selection criteria and pre-payment. Confidential fields above are stripped before delivery.

Costs, forms, and rules change between cycles. Always confirm the current details on the official Louisiana page linked above before you send payment. This page is a plain-language summary, not legal advice.

Louisiana voter file FAQ.

How much does the Louisiana voter file cost?

Louisiana doesn't publish a flat rate; the online tool quotes a price based on the voters you select. A $5 convenience fee applies to credit-card payments, and vote history is an extra-cost option.

Can I use it for my campaign?

Yes. Permitted uses include election, political, governmental, scholarly, journalistic, and political-fundraising purposes; commercial use is prohibited.

How long does it take?

Usually a few business days after payment clears; large statewide pulls with vote history can take 5-10 business days.

Do I have to load the file into Motion51 myself?

No -- forward us the Louisiana file and we load it, geocode it, and build your turf.

Once you have the file, Motion51 takes it from there.

Getting the file is the errand. The campaign is what happens next: loading tens of thousands of addresses, putting them on a map, cutting them into walkable turf, and tracking every door. That's what Motion51 does.

Send us the file the state gives you and we load it in, geocode the addresses, and set up your district so volunteers can start knocking. The app works offline for the stretches where cell coverage drops, and every door is logged with a timestamp. If you're weighing a race in Louisiana, our For Candidates page walks through the next steps.
