Muskegon County had an estimated 177,428 residents in July 2024, the 12th most populous of Michigan's 83 counties, up 1.5% since the 2020 census. Of those, 138,669 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 19.4% are 65 or older. Its 148,117 active registered voters equal about 106.8% of that voting-age population.
It covers 504 square miles of land (352 people per square mile). The largest towns and cities are Muskegon (37,287), Norton Shores (25,070), Muskegon (17,810), Fruitport (15,458) and Egelston (11,415). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 40.0, a median household income of $65,024, 21.3% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 78.1% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 95,160 votes were cast for president, about 68.6% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 48.4% and the Republican ticket 50.2%. The two-party margin moved from D+29.3 in 2008 to R+1.8 in 2024.
