Lafayette County had an estimated 59,843 residents in July 2024, the 12th most populous of Mississippi's 82 counties, up 7.2% since the 2020 census. Of those, 49,201 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 14.4% are 65 or older. Its 32,828 active registered voters equal about 66.7% of that voting-age population.
It covers 632 square miles of land (95 people per square mile), and 53.9% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Oxford (26,801), Taylor (410) and Abbeville (383). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 30.7, a median household income of $67,185, 46.5% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 63.8% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 23,409 votes were cast for president, about 47.6% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 38.3% and the Republican ticket 60.0%. The two-party margin moved from R+12.4 in 2008 to R+21.7 in 2024.
