St. Louis City had an estimated 279,695 residents in July 2024, the fifth most populous of Missouri's 115 counties, down 7.2% since the 2020 census. Of those, 229,808 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 16.8% are 65 or older. It covers 62 square miles of land (4,532 people per square mile).
The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 36.8, a median household income of $56,160, 41.1% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 45.3% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them. In 2024, 116,082 votes were cast for president, about 50.5% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 81.4% and the Republican ticket 16.7%. The two-party margin moved from D+68.2 in 2008 to D+64.7 in 2024.
