How to get the Missouri voter file.

Missouri isn't pre-loaded on Motion51, so you request your district's voter file from the state and we load it in. Here's exactly where to get it, what it costs, how long it takes, and the rules — in plain English.

The short version.

The Missouri voter registration file is a public record you request from the state elections office. You pay a fee, sign a use affidavit, and get the list of registered voters for your district — names, addresses, and registration details. Then you hand it to Motion51 and we load it, geocode it, and cut your turf.

Missouri keeps a single statewide database (the MCVR) fed by all 116 local election authorities, and the Secretary of State's Elections Division sells the full file at a low, actual-cost fee. In even-numbered years, your local election authority must also supply your own jurisdiction's list to candidates for a reasonable charge.

What it costs.

Approximately $35 for the statewide voter file including vote history (widely reported figure; SoS sets the fee under RSMo 115.157 referencing Chapter 610 actual-cost limits). Fees collected are deposited into the SoS technology trust fund per RSMo 115.157. Confirm current rate at time of order.

Tip — you may only need one county. If you're running in a single county or district, ask your local election authority for just that jurisdiction's list -- in even-numbered years they're required to provide it to candidates for a reasonable fee.

How to request it, step by step.

  1. Write to the Secretary of State's Elections Division (mail, in person, or email) -- or, for just your jurisdiction, your local election authority.
  2. State your name/organization, the scope you want (statewide or by district), and the delivery format (CD-ROM, flash drive, or electronic).
  3. Sign the attestation that the data won't be used for commercial purposes (RSMo 115.157.5).
  4. Pay the fee -- the statewide file with vote history is commonly cited around $35, but confirm the current rate when you order.
  5. Expect delivery within about 1-3 weeks of your request and payment.

How long it takes.

Typically 1-3 weeks from request + payment. State extract reflects participation reported by local authorities, which can lag up to 90 days for the most recent election.

Use restrictions — read before you order.

RSMo 115.157.5: voter lists may not be used for commercial purposes; violation is a Class A misdemeanor. RSMo 115.157 / 115.163 establish that fees are set per Chapter 610 (Sunshine Law) actual-cost principles. Records that may be closed: portions related to voters who have completed an address-confidentiality program. Voter participation reported up to 3 months after the election.

Costs, forms, and rules change between cycles. Always confirm the current details on the official Missouri page linked above before you send payment. This page is a plain-language summary, not legal advice.

Missouri voter file FAQ.

How much does the Missouri voter file cost?

The statewide file (with vote history) is set at actual cost and has been widely reported around $35, but the Secretary of State sets the fee under RSMo 115.157 -- confirm the current rate when you order. Local jurisdiction lists are priced by the local authority.

Can I use it for my campaign?

Yes. Missouri only bars commercial use (RSMo 115.157.5) -- a Class A misdemeanor to violate. Campaign and voter-contact use is fine.

How long does it take?

Typically 1-3 weeks from request plus payment. Recent vote history can lag up to about 90 days as local authorities report it.

Do I have to load the file into Motion51 myself?

No -- send us the Missouri file and we load it, geocode it, and set up your turf.

Once you have the file, Motion51 takes it from there.

Getting the file is the errand. The campaign is what happens next: loading tens of thousands of addresses, putting them on a map, cutting them into walkable turf, and tracking every door. That's what Motion51 does.

Send us the file the state gives you and we load it in, geocode the addresses, and set up your district so volunteers can start knocking. The app works offline for the stretches where cell coverage drops, and every door is logged with a timestamp. If you're weighing a race in Missouri, our For Candidates page walks through the next steps.
