Of those, 159,680 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 21.1% are 65 or older. Its 125,454 active registered voters equal about 78.6% of that voting-age population.
It covers 706 square miles of land (278 people per square mile). The largest towns and cities are Union (54,298), Binghamton (46,773), Vestal (31,847), Chenango (10,652) and Fenton (6,241). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 39.2, a median household income of $62,616, 31.0% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 64.5% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 89,905 votes were cast for president, about 56.3% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 50.2% and the Republican ticket 49.8%. The two-party margin moved from D+8.0 in 2008 to D+0.4 in 2024.
