Cayuga County had an estimated 74,567 residents in July 2024, the 36th most populous of New York's 62 counties, down 2.2% since the 2020 census. Of those, 60,480 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 22.8% are 65 or older. Its 48,835 active registered voters equal about 80.7% of that voting-age population.
It covers 692 square miles of land (108 people per square mile). The largest towns and cities are Auburn (25,963), Brutus (4,217), Owasco (3,469), Sennett (3,236) and Moravia (3,205). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 43.8, a median household income of $67,904, 24.6% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 71.4% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 36,254 votes were cast for president, about 59.9% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 43.5% and the Republican ticket 56.5%. The two-party margin moved from D+8.5 in 2008 to R+13.0 in 2024.
