Of those, 51,170 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 28.0% are 65 or older. Its 46,344 active registered voters equal about 90.6% of that voting-age population.
It covers 635 square miles of land (95 people per square mile). The largest towns and cities are Kinderhook (8,120), Claverack (5,994), Hudson (5,735), Ghent (5,212) and Greenport (4,350). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 49.8, a median household income of $81,528, 39.4% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 76.3% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 35,564 votes were cast for president, about 69.5% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 57.4% and the Republican ticket 42.6%. The two-party margin moved from D+13.5 in 2008 to D+14.8 in 2024.
