Of those, 31,231 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 28.0% are 65 or older. Its 26,053 active registered voters equal about 83.4% of that voting-age population.
It covers 1,794 square miles of land (20 people per square mile). The largest towns and cities are North Elba (7,660), Ticonderoga (4,629), Moriah (4,364), Jay (2,493) and Chesterfield (2,440). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 49.9, a median household income of $71,661, 32.8% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 77.3% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 19,162 votes were cast for president, about 61.4% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 50.3% and the Republican ticket 49.7%. The two-party margin moved from D+13.3 in 2008 to D+0.6 in 2024.
