Nassau County had an estimated 1,392,438 residents in July 2024, the fifth most populous of New York's 62 counties, down 0.2% since the 2020 census. Of those, 1,096,997 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 19.6% are 65 or older. Its 1,008,838 active registered voters equal about 92.0% of that voting-age population.
It covers 284 square miles of land (4,894 people per square mile). The largest towns and cities are Hempstead (792,341), Oyster Bay (299,540), North Hempstead (237,692), Long Beach (34,777) and Glen Cove (28,088). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 42.0, a median household income of $146,202, 49.7% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 81.9% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 706,541 votes were cast for president, about 64.4% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 47.9% and the Republican ticket 52.1%. The two-party margin moved from D+8.4 in 2008 to R+4.2 in 2024.
