Oneida County had an estimated 228,347 residents in July 2024, the 17th most populous of New York's 62 counties, down 1.6% since the 2020 census. Of those, 180,009 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 20.7% are 65 or older. Its 137,209 active registered voters equal about 76.2% of that voting-age population.
It covers 1,212 square miles of land (188 people per square mile). The largest towns and cities are Utica (63,660), Rome (31,990), New Hartford (22,107), Whitestown (17,786) and Kirkland (9,735). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 40.7, a median household income of $70,154, 27.8% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 67.7% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 100,102 votes were cast for president, about 55.6% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 39.4% and the Republican ticket 60.6%. The two-party margin moved from R+6.1 in 2008 to R+21.2 in 2024.
