Onondaga County had an estimated 469,812 residents in July 2024, the 11th most populous of New York's 62 counties, down 1.4% since the 2020 census. Of those, 373,409 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 19.7% are 65 or older. Its 303,288 active registered voters equal about 81.2% of that voting-age population.
It covers 778 square miles of land (604 people per square mile). The largest towns and cities are Syracuse (146,097), Clay (59,763), Manlius (33,153), Salina (32,695) and Cicero (30,976). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 39.6, a median household income of $76,945, 39.2% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 65.9% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 227,071 votes were cast for president, about 60.8% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 58.6% and the Republican ticket 41.4%. The two-party margin moved from D+20.4 in 2008 to D+17.2 in 2024.
