St. Lawrence County had an estimated 106,198 residents in July 2024, the 27th most populous of New York's 62 counties, down 2.1% since the 2020 census. Of those, 85,621 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 19.8% are 65 or older. Its 62,768 active registered voters equal about 73.3% of that voting-age population.
It covers 2,680 square miles of land (40 people per square mile). The largest towns and cities are Potsdam (14,518), Massena (12,170), Canton (11,320), Ogdensburg (9,282) and Gouverneur (6,543). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 39.3, a median household income of $62,850, 25.3% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 71.9% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 43,929 votes were cast for president, about 51.3% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 41.0% and the Republican ticket 59.0%. The two-party margin moved from D+16.4 in 2008 to R+18.0 in 2024.
