Ulster County had an estimated 182,977 residents in July 2024, the 20th most populous of New York's 62 counties, up 0.6% since the 2020 census. Of those, 152,774 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 22.4% are 65 or older. Its 130,145 active registered voters equal about 85.2% of that voting-age population.
It covers 1,124 square miles of land (163 people per square mile). The largest towns and cities are Kingston (23,748), Saugerties (19,434), New Paltz (15,617), Shawangunk (13,418) and Ulster (12,640). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 44.1, a median household income of $86,271, 38.2% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 69.9% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 97,717 votes were cast for president, about 64.0% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 59.3% and the Republican ticket 40.7%. The two-party margin moved from D+23.5 in 2008 to D+18.6 in 2024.
