Alexander County had an estimated 36,693 residents in July 2024, the 67th most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 0.7% since the 2020 census. Of those, 29,684 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 21.2% are 65 or older. Its 23,453 active registered voters equal about 79.0% of that voting-age population.
It covers 260 square miles of land (141 people per square mile), and 93.7% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. Its one incorporated place is Taylorsville (2,294 residents). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 43.8, a median household income of $65,354, 16.7% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 80.7% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 20,625 votes were cast for president, about 69.5% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 19.7% and the Republican ticket 79.5%. The two-party margin moved from R+38.4 in 2008 to R+59.8 in 2024.
