Anson County had an estimated 22,432 residents in July 2024, the 75th most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 1.7% since the 2020 census. Of those, 18,019 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 20.1% are 65 or older. Its 13,289 active registered voters equal about 73.7% of that voting-age population.
It covers 532 square miles of land (42 people per square mile), and 58.5% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Wadesboro (4,965), Polkton (2,698), Ansonville (441), Lilesville (392) and Peachland (390). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 41.9, a median household income of $47,302, 9.9% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 68.5% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 10,859 votes were cast for president, about 60.3% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 48.4% and the Republican ticket 50.9%. The two-party margin moved from D+21.0 in 2008 to R+2.5 in 2024.
