The largest cities and towns are Banner Elk (1,186), Newland (733), Elk Park (555), Sugar Mountain (382) and Crossnore (151). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 47.1, a median household income of $61,428, 25.0% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 83.0% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 9,468 votes were cast for president, about 62.1% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 23.4% and the Republican ticket 75.8%. The two-party margin moved from R+44.1 in 2008 to R+52.4 in 2024.
