Buncombe County had an estimated 279,210 residents in July 2024, the seventh most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 3.6% since the 2020 census. Of those, 230,987 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 22.2% are 65 or older. Its 183,294 active registered voters equal about 79.4% of that voting-age population.
It covers 656 square miles of land (425 people per square mile), and 57.4% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Asheville (94,992), Black Mountain (8,572), Woodfin (8,158), Weaverville (4,799) and Biltmore Forest (1,462). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 42.6, a median household income of $74,436, 45.9% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 66.2% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 159,885 votes were cast for president, about 69.2% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 61.7% and the Republican ticket 36.9%. The two-party margin moved from D+13.9 in 2008 to D+24.8 in 2024.
