Burke County had an estimated 88,545 residents in July 2024, the 33rd most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 1.1% since the 2020 census. Of those, 72,570 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 22.4% are 65 or older. Its 52,437 active registered voters equal about 72.3% of that voting-age population.
It covers 506 square miles of land (175 people per square mile), and 64.1% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Morganton (17,825), Valdese (4,713), Drexel (1,777), Hildebran (1,680) and Connelly Springs (1,545). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 44.9, a median household income of $58,592, 21.0% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 74.5% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 45,733 votes were cast for president, about 63.0% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 29.0% and the Republican ticket 70.3%. The two-party margin moved from R+19.2 in 2008 to R+41.3 in 2024.
