Carteret County had an estimated 70,259 residents in July 2024, the 39th most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 3.8% since the 2020 census. Of those, 58,772 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 28.6% are 65 or older. Its 51,706 active registered voters equal about 88.0% of that voting-age population.
It covers 508 square miles of land (138 people per square mile), and 54.3% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Morehead City (9,963), Beaufort (4,895), Newport (4,501), Emerald Isle (4,001) and Cape Carteret (2,288). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 50.5, a median household income of $72,322, 34.5% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 74.7% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 45,693 votes were cast for president, about 77.7% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 28.0% and the Republican ticket 71.1%. The two-party margin moved from R+34.7 in 2008 to R+43.1 in 2024.
