Catawba County had an estimated 167,054 residents in July 2024, the 19th most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 4.0% since the 2020 census. Of those, 131,761 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 19.4% are 65 or older. Its 102,548 active registered voters equal about 77.8% of that voting-age population.
It covers 401 square miles of land (416 people per square mile), and 52.9% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Hickory (part) (44,962), Newton (13,571), Conover (8,760), Long View (part) (4,525) and Maiden (part) (3,852). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 42.1, a median household income of $67,864, 26.1% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 72.2% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 86,885 votes were cast for president, about 65.9% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 30.6% and the Republican ticket 68.6%. The two-party margin moved from R+25.0 in 2008 to R+38.0 in 2024.
