Cherokee County had an estimated 30,373 residents in July 2024, the 71st most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 5.6% since the 2020 census. Of those, 25,565 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 32.8% are 65 or older. Its 21,129 active registered voters equal about 82.6% of that voting-age population.
It covers 456 square miles of land (67 people per square mile), and 88.6% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Andrews (1,762) and Murphy (1,693). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 53.5, a median household income of $53,628, 24.2% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 83.7% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 17,748 votes were cast for president, about 69.4% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 20.8% and the Republican ticket 78.2%. The two-party margin moved from R+38.6 in 2008 to R+57.4 in 2024.
