Columbus County had an estimated 50,054 residents in July 2024, the 52nd most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, down 1.1% since the 2020 census. Of those, 39,795 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 21.4% are 65 or older. Its 32,024 active registered voters equal about 80.5% of that voting-age population.
It covers 938 square miles of land (53 people per square mile), and 71.9% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Whiteville (4,688), Tabor City (3,831), Chadbourn (1,528), Lake Waccamaw (1,227) and Brunswick (959). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 42.6, a median household income of $49,442, 14.6% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 71.1% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 26,363 votes were cast for president, about 66.2% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 32.8% and the Republican ticket 66.7%. The two-party margin moved from R+7.9 in 2008 to R+33.9 in 2024.
