Gaston County had an estimated 242,010 residents in July 2024, the 12th most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 6.2% since the 2020 census. Of those, 188,456 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 16.9% are 65 or older. Its 138,955 active registered voters equal about 73.7% of that voting-age population.
It covers 356 square miles of land (680 people per square mile), and 34.0% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Gastonia (85,535), Mount Holly (18,723), Belmont (16,044), Cherryville (6,385) and Dallas (6,270). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 39.1, a median household income of $67,478, 26.5% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 66.8% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 118,959 votes were cast for president, about 63.1% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 37.0% and the Republican ticket 62.1%. The two-party margin moved from R+25.0 in 2008 to R+25.1 in 2024.
