Johnston County had an estimated 249,794 residents in July 2024, the ninth most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 15.6% since the 2020 census. Of those, 189,297 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 14.3% are 65 or older. Its 149,198 active registered voters equal about 78.8% of that voting-age population.
It covers 792 square miles of land (315 people per square mile), and 70.7% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Clayton (part) (31,732), Smithfield (12,806), Selma (7,228), Archer Lodge (5,522) and Benson (part) (4,534). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 38.1, a median household income of $83,384, 28.9% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 76.1% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 124,360 votes were cast for president, about 65.7% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 38.7% and the Republican ticket 60.2%. The two-party margin moved from R+23.7 in 2008 to R+21.5 in 2024.
