Lee County had an estimated 68,537 residents in July 2024, the 41st most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 8.3% since the 2020 census. Of those, 52,750 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 17.5% are 65 or older. Its 35,473 active registered voters equal about 67.2% of that voting-age population.
It covers 255 square miles of land (269 people per square mile), and 49.9% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Sanford (32,971) and Broadway (part) (1,362). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 39.5, a median household income of $65,387, 21.3% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 67.3% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 30,007 votes were cast for president, about 56.9% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 40.8% and the Republican ticket 58.3%. The two-party margin moved from R+8.4 in 2008 to R+17.5 in 2024.
