New Hanover County had an estimated 243,333 residents in July 2024, the 11th most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 7.8% since the 2020 census. Of those, 201,339 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 19.9% are 65 or older. Its 159,929 active registered voters equal about 79.4% of that voting-age population.
It covers 192 square miles of land (1,266 people per square mile), and 43.8% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Wilmington (125,284), Carolina Beach (6,864), Wrightsville Beach (2,411) and Kure Beach (2,154). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 39.9, a median household income of $75,166, 45.4% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 61.4% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 138,243 votes were cast for president, about 68.7% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 49.8% and the Republican ticket 49.2%. The two-party margin moved from R+1.4 in 2008 to D+0.6 in 2024.
