Pender County had an estimated 70,077 residents in July 2024, the 40th most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 16.4% since the 2020 census. Of those, 54,444 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 18.6% are 65 or older. Its 46,849 active registered voters equal about 86.0% of that voting-age population.
It covers 871 square miles of land (80 people per square mile), and 85.9% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Surf City (part) (4,544), Burgaw (3,825), Topsail Beach (500), St. Helena (437) and Atkinson (346). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 41.6, a median household income of $80,396, 30.6% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 82.7% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 38,837 votes were cast for president, about 71.3% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 32.1% and the Republican ticket 67.1%. The two-party margin moved from R+15.6 in 2008 to R+35.0 in 2024.
