Richmond County had an estimated 41,990 residents in July 2024, the 61st most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, down 2.2% since the 2020 census. Of those, 32,119 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 18.9% are 65 or older. Its 24,160 active registered voters equal about 75.2% of that voting-age population.
It covers 474 square miles of land (89 people per square mile), and 60.1% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Rockingham (8,802), Hamlet (5,888), Ellerbe (841), Dobbins Heights (688) and Hoffman (422). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 40.5, a median household income of $44,883, 16.0% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 65.9% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 19,848 votes were cast for president, about 61.8% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 39.2% and the Republican ticket 60.1%. The two-party margin moved from D+1.5 in 2008 to R+20.9 in 2024.
