Stanly County had an estimated 67,326 residents in July 2024, the 42nd most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 7.7% since the 2020 census. Of those, 52,803 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 19.2% are 65 or older. Its 41,898 active registered voters equal about 79.3% of that voting-age population.
It covers 395 square miles of land (170 people per square mile), and 49.9% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are Albemarle (17,344), Locust (part) (5,295), Norwood (2,520), Oakboro (2,270) and Badin (1,871). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 40.5, a median household income of $60,704, 19.9% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 74.5% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 36,651 votes were cast for president, about 69.4% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 24.2% and the Republican ticket 75.1%. The two-party margin moved from R+36.7 in 2008 to R+50.9 in 2024.
