Wilkes County had an estimated 66,186 residents in July 2024, the 43rd most populous of North Carolina's 100 counties, up 0.3% since the 2020 census. Of those, 53,260 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 23.7% are 65 or older. Its 40,785 active registered voters equal about 76.6% of that voting-age population.
It covers 754 square miles of land (88 people per square mile), and 87.1% of residents live outside any incorporated city or town. The largest cities and towns are North Wilkesboro (4,412), Wilkesboro (3,620), Ronda (442) and Elkin (part) (73). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 45.7, a median household income of $51,721, 16.9% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 73.5% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 36,240 votes were cast for president, about 68.0% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 19.9% and the Republican ticket 79.5%. The two-party margin moved from R+38.2 in 2008 to R+59.6 in 2024.
