Fayette County had an estimated 28,782 residents in July 2024, the 75th most populous of Ohio's 88 counties, down 0.6% since the 2020 census. Of those, 22,137 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 18.8% are 65 or older. Its 14,294 active registered voters equal about 64.6% of that voting-age population.

The largest cities and towns are Washington Court House (14,446), Jeffersonville (1,236), Bloomingburg (867), New Holland (part) (139) and Milledgeville (99). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 39.9, a median household income of $63,275, 14.4% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 64.7% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 12,571 votes were cast for president, about 56.8% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 22.1% and the Republican ticket 77.2%. The two-party margin moved from R+23.1 in 2008 to R+55.1 in 2024.
