Mahoning County had an estimated 225,786 residents in July 2024, the 13th most populous of Ohio's 88 counties, down 1.2% since the 2020 census. Of those, 180,325 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 23.4% are 65 or older. Its 129,589 active registered voters equal about 71.9% of that voting-age population.
It covers 412 square miles of land (549 people per square mile). The largest cities and towns are Youngstown (part) (59,122), Struthers (9,891), Campbell (7,751), Canfield (7,628) and Sebring (4,134). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 43.2, a median household income of $56,942, 27.0% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 70.3% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 112,678 votes were cast for president, about 62.5% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 44.9% and the Republican ticket 54.4%. The two-party margin moved from D+26.6 in 2008 to R+9.5 in 2024.
