Richland County had an estimated 124,853 residents in July 2024, the 23rd most populous of Ohio's 88 counties, down 0.1% since the 2020 census. Of those, 98,137 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 20.8% are 65 or older. Its 66,715 active registered voters equal about 68.0% of that voting-age population.
It covers 495 square miles of land (252 people per square mile). The largest cities and towns are Mansfield (47,593), Shelby (9,238), Ontario (6,648), Lexington (4,832) and Bellville (1,995). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 40.9, a median household income of $59,509, 17.9% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 67.9% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 58,358 votes were cast for president, about 59.5% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 28.4% and the Republican ticket 70.8%. The two-party margin moved from R+13.6 in 2008 to R+42.4 in 2024.
