Scioto County had an estimated 71,798 residents in July 2024, the 35th most populous of Ohio's 88 counties, down 3.0% since the 2020 census. Of those, 56,414 are 18 or older, the voting-age population, and 19.4% are 65 or older. Its 35,629 active registered voters equal about 63.2% of that voting-age population.
It covers 610 square miles of land (118 people per square mile). The largest cities and towns are Portsmouth (17,489), New Boston (2,227), South Webster (651), Rarden (142) and Otway (89). The American Community Survey (2020-2024) puts it at a median age of 41.1, a median household income of $50,609, 18.2% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 68.4% of occupied homes owned by the people living in them.
In 2024, 31,179 votes were cast for president, about 55.3% of the voting-age population; the Democratic ticket took 25.7% and the Republican ticket 73.7%. The two-party margin moved from R+6.4 in 2008 to R+48.0 in 2024.
