The short version.

Paulding County, Ohio has 10,385 active registered voters across 16 precincts, as of June 2026. Here's what it takes to get on the ballot here.

Ohio has no party registration; you count as a member of a party if you voted in that party's primary within the last two years. To run in a party primary you file three things together: a declaration of candidacy, a nominating petition, and a filing fee. Independents file a nominating petition instead.

This page covers how that works for Paulding County. It is not legal advice; for the official rules, your county Board of Elections and the Ohio Secretary of State are the sources of truth.

Paulding County by the numbers.

  • 10,385 active registered voters across 16 precincts (official Ohio voter file, June 2026).
  • 6,430 supervoters (61.92%, voted in at least 3 of the last 4 November generals). These are the doors reliable-voter campaigns knock first.
  • In 2024, Paulding County cast 9,276 votes for president: 21.4% Democratic, 77.7% Republican.

Ohio doesn't have party registration. You're treated as a member of a party if you voted in that party's primary within the last two years (or haven't voted in another party's primary). There are two paths.

Path 1: Run in a party primary.

File three things together by 4 p.m. on the 90th day before the primary: a declaration of candidacy, a nominating petition, and the filing fee. The petition must be signed by qualified electors who are members of your party (Ohio Rev. Code §3513.05):

  • Statewide offices (Governor, U.S. Senate, Attorney General, etc.): 1,000 signatures.
  • District & county offices (U.S. House, Ohio Senate, Ohio House, county offices): 50 signatures.
  • Minor-party candidates need half those numbers.

Filing fees (§3513.10): statewide $150 · U.S. House / General Assembly $85 · county office $80 · judicial $80 · city $45 · village / township / school board $30.

Path 2: Run as an independent.

Skip the primary and file an independent nominating petition (more signatures; Ohio Rev. Code §3513.257), due the day before the primary. Your name then appears only on the November general ballot.

You file with your county Board of Elections for county, local, and legislative offices, or with the Ohio Secretary of State for statewide and multi-county district offices.

What the signatures mean in Paulding County.

The 50-signature minimum for a county or district office is a small fraction of Paulding County's 10,385 active registered voters; for most candidates the real work is the paperwork and the fee, not the signatures. Aim to collect a cushion above the minimum, since the board verifies each one and a petition is rejected if it has too few valid signatures.

Exact signature counts and fees for your specific office are set by statute and confirmed by Paulding County Board of Elections; check with them (or the Ohio Secretary of State's candidate guide) before you file.

Key Ohio dates.

2027 and 2028: the odd year is local, the county year is presidential

No county office is ever on an odd-year Ohio ballot. November 2, 2027 is the regular municipal election: city offices, boards of education, educational service center boards and one of the three township trustee seats. County offices return in 2028, and because that is a presidential year Ohio pulls the whole primary back to March, which moves every filing deadline with it.

  • Wed Feb 3, 2027, 4:00 p.m. Petition filing deadline for the May 4, 2027 primary (R.C. 3513.05, the 90th day). Published by the Secretary of State.
  • Mon Feb 22, 2027, 4:00 p.m. Write-in declaration of intent for the May 4, 2027 primary. Published.
  • Tue May 4, 2027 2027 PRIMARY. Published.
  • Wed Aug 4, 2027, 4:00 p.m. COMPUTED nonpartisan nominating petition deadline for the municipal election -- city, board of education and township offices, most of which never see a primary at all (R.C. 3513.253-.255, the 90th day).
  • Tue Nov 2, 2027 COMPUTED municipal election (R.C. 3501.01(B)).
  • Wed Dec 22, 2027, 4:00 p.m. COMPUTED declaration of candidacy deadline for the 2028 county races (R.C. 3513.05, the 90th day before a March primary). This is the real 2028 county deadline and it falls just before Christmas of the previous year.
  • Tue Mar 21, 2028 COMPUTED 2028 PRIMARY. In a presidential year Ohio moves the primary to the third Tuesday after the first Monday in March (R.C. 3501.01(E)(2)), so county races share the presidential ballot.
  • Mon Mar 20, 2028, 4:00 p.m. COMPUTED independent nominating petition deadline for the November 2028 ballot -- the day before the primary, and nearly eight months before the election (R.C. 3513.257).
  • Mon Aug 28, 2028, 4:00 p.m. COMPUTED write-in declaration of intent for the 2028 general (R.C. 3513.041).
  • Tue Nov 7, 2028 COMPUTED 2028 GENERAL ELECTION.

Ohio's county offices split by year. A commissioner seat and the county auditor are elected in 2026 and 2030; two commissioner seats plus prosecuting attorney, clerk of courts, sheriff, recorder, treasurer, engineer and coroner are elected in 2024 and 2028. Charter counties -- Summit and Cuyahoga -- have replaced the standard slate entirely, so read the county charter rather than the default.

Status as of October 18, 2026: dates that have passed are greyed out and marked CLOSED.

The 2026 and early-2027 dates come from the Ohio Secretary of State's 2026 Ohio Elections Calendar (form SOS 0503), read on 2026-08-20 and cross-checked against three county board of elections copies. Ohio has not yet published a full 2027 or 2028 calendar, so dates marked COMPUTED are arithmetic from the Revised Code, with the weekend roll-forward in R.C. 1.14 applied. Confirm anything you rely on with your county board of elections.
